PAIN SEEKER

For pain seekers, agony is more than a pleasure — it’s a path to power. Those so devoted turn their own skins into scarred manuscripts of noteworthy deeds and unforgettable failures. There is no formal order of pain seekers. Instead, the path is a personal journey guided by the practitioner’s convictions and experiences. Even when two pain seekers meet, they rarely remain together longer than it takes to compare their wounds, as such disciples too often attempt to outdo one another’s pain.

Requirements

To qualify to become a pain seeker, a character must fulfill all the following criteria:

Base Attack Bonus: +5

Skills: Heal 5 ranks, Influence 5 ranks

Feats: Diehard, Endurance, Toughness

Hit Die: d10

Class Skills: The pain seeker’s class skills are Heal (Wis), Influence (Cha), Knowledge (divine) (Int), Sense Motive (Wis), and Survival (Wis).

Skill Ranks per Level: 4 + Int modifier

Table: The Pain Seeker

CLASS FEATURES

The following are the class features of the pain seeker:

Damage Reduction (Ex):

The pain seeker’s incredible resilience grants her a modest amount of damage reduction (DR). Subtract 1 point from the damage she is dealt by any weapon or natural attack. The pain seeker’s damage reduction increases by 1 point every 2 pain taster levels thereafter. This ability stacks with any other damage reduction the pain seeker might already have from other classes. The value of this damage resistance doubles when the pain seeker is subject to nonlethal damage.

Masochism (Ex):

At 1st level, a pain seeker becomes empowered by pain, and is inured to its effects. She receives a +4 class bonus on saving throws made against pain effects. Additionally, a pain seeker can deal lethal damage to herself at any time to gain a bonus on attack and damage rolls. Doing so is a swift action that deals 2 points of damage to the pain seeker, does not require an attack roll, and bypasses any damage reduction the pain seeker possesses. For 1 round, the pain seeker gains a +1 morale bonus on attack rolls and a +2 bonus on damage rolls. Every two levels thereafter, the amount of damage the pain seeker deals to herself and the resulting bonus she receives on damage rolls increase by 2 (to a maximum of 6 points of self-inflicted damage and 6 points of bonus damage to other targets at 5th level).

Enduring Scar (Su):

As a pain seeker gains levels, she accumulates scars of supernatural significance. She can activate her enduring scars abilities in any combination a number of times per day equal to her class level plus her Charisma modifier. At 2nd and 4th level, the pain seeker awakens a new enduring scar selected from the list below.

  • Blood: As a swift action, the pain seeker can imbue a melee weapon she wields with the vicious weapon special ability for a number of rounds equal to her Charisma modifier (minimum 1 round).

  • Sacrifice: As an immediate action, the pain seeker can share the damage taken by one ally she can see within 30 feet. This functions as per shield other, but lasts only until the end of her next turn or until her ally moves farther than 30 feet from the pain seeker.

  • Suffering: As a swift action, the pain seeker’s skin and nerves harden until the beginning of her next turn, increasing her DR by 2 and granting a +2 bonus on saving throws against spells and effects with the emotion or fear descriptor.

  • Tenacity: When a pain seeker is struck by a critical hit or sneak attack, she can gain a +2 morale bonus on attack rolls, skill checks, ability checks, and saving throws for a number of rounds equal to her Charisma modifier as an immediate action. If the pain seeker already receives a morale bonus on one or more of these rolls, the morale bonus increases by 1 while this ability lasts.

Painful Purification (Su):

A pain seeker can relive her past sacrifices in order to activate an enduring scar’s ability, even if she has expended all her daily uses of the ability. Rather than expend a daily use of enduring scars, she can activate a scar by taking 1 point of damage per Hit Die she has. This damage can’t be healed by any means other than getting a full night’s rest, which removes all damage dealt in this fashion. This damage cannot be ignored, reduced, or redirected.

Sanguine Sacrifice (Su):

At 4th level, when a pain seeker uses the painful purification ability, she gains a +1 morale bonus on attack rolls, skill checks, ability checks, and saving throws for 1 hour. Multiple uses of this ability do not stack.

True Martyr (Su):

At 5th level, a pain seeker can embrace death in a final act of defiance. As an immediate action, she can take half the damage dealt to all allies within 60 feet by a single effect, such as a breath weapon, melee attack, or cave-in. If this damage would kill the pain seeker, her blood coalesces in her space in the form of a revenant that fights in her place for 1 minute before dissipating. A pain seeker can use this ability once per week.
